Vallejo Mecha Color: Mecha Primer Black (200ml)

Vallejo 74.642 Mecha Primer Black Airbrush Primer, 200ml

Satin Acrylic Primer for Gunpla, Miniatures, and Model Kits

Flexible joints, resin parts, PVC pieces, and handled gaming models need a primer that can do more than simply cover the surface. Vallejo 74.642 Mecha Primer Black is made for projects that get touched, posed, masked, painted over, and handled during the build, giving your next layers of paint a stronger, cleaner base to grip.

This black acrylic primer is part of the Vallejo Mecha Color range, a line designed for airbrushing mecha kits, Gunpla, action figures, miniatures, robots, and other models exposed to frequent handling. Its satin black finish creates a deep undercoat that works especially well before metallics, dark armor colors, mechanical parts, weathering layers, NMM effects, pre-shading, and high-contrast paint schemes.

The 200ml bottle is a practical choice for builders who prime often or work on larger projects. It gives you enough product for multiple kits without constantly reaching for smaller bottles, while still preserving fine surface detail when applied in controlled, thin coats.

The Mecha Strength Advantage

• Strong adhesion for hobby surfaces: Designed for difficult model materials such as plastic, ABS, resin, PVC, metal, and similar hobby parts when properly cleaned before priming.
• Satin black base coat: Helps create depth under metallics, gunmetal, dark armor colors, mechanical finishes, and non-metallic metal painting.
• Detail-friendly coverage: Applies smoothly in thin layers without burying panel lines, rivets, molded details, or surface texture.
• Built for handled models: A strong choice for Gunpla, poseable kits, tabletop pieces, action figures, and display models that may be handled during painting or posing.
• Water-based acrylic formula: Easier to work with than harsher solvent-based systems, while still needing normal ventilation and label safety precautions.

Technical Specifications & Airbrush Setup

Beyond the Label

Black primer is not only useful when the final model will be dark. For mecha, sci-fi armor, tanks, weapons, inner frames, and mechanical parts, Vallejo Mecha Primer Black helps create natural shadow and depth before the color work even starts. It is also a smart base before silver, steel, gunmetal, burnt metal, and other metallic finishes because the darker undercoat makes those colors look deeper and less flat.

For miniature painters, black primer is useful when you want stronger contrast, darker recesses, or a more forgiving base for tabletop models. If a tiny area is hard to reach with later paint layers, the black base helps keep that shadow looking intentional instead of unfinished.

Pre-Shading with Mecha Primer Black

1. Prime the entire model with Mecha Primer Black at 1520 PSI.
2. Allow the primer to dry before layering additional colors.
3. Load your mid-tone color and reduce pressure slightly for controlled passes.
4. Airbrush from above and at shallow angles, leaving recesses and shadow areas darker.
5. The black base in recesses creates natural shadow depth without requiring a separate post-shading step.

From the SprayGunner Team

Black primer gets misused when people treat it like a neutral base it is not. It is an active tool. When you spray a mid-tone over black and leave the recesses untouched, the shadow is already built in before you pick up a detail brush. That is pre-shading, and it is why many armor and Gunpla builders default to black regardless of their final color.

The other thing people underuse is black over bare PVC joints before painting articulated models. Standard primers can crack at flex points; this one is designed for handled mecha and action figure projects. If you are painting dark or metallic schemes, starting here can save two to three extra layers and a lot of dry time.

Application Tips

For the best result, clean the model before priming. Mold release, skin oils, sanding dust, or leftover polishing residue can weaken adhesion even with a good primer. A quick wash with mild soap and water, followed by full drying, is often enough for plastic kits. For difficult surfaces, wipe parts with isopropyl alcohol before priming.

Shake the bottle very well before use. Apply Mecha Primer Black in light passes instead of one heavy wet coat. Two or three thin layers will usually give a smoother finish, better detail preservation, and fewer pooling problems around panel lines or raised details.

Start around 1520 PSI and adjust depending on your airbrush, needle size, distance, and room conditions. If you need finer control, use Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver in small amounts rather than overloading the surface. Let the primer dry before handling, masking, or applying heavy color coats, and allow longer curing time when the model will be posed, taped, or worked on aggressively.

Safety & Handling

Always follow the safety information on the product label. Use in a well-ventilated area, avoid spraying near your face, and clean your airbrush after use to prevent dried primer buildup inside the nozzle.

Frequently Asked Questions Vallejo Mecha Primer Black 74.642

What is the finish on Vallejo Mecha Primer Black matte or satin?

Mecha Primer Black dries to a satin finish, not fully matte. This is intentional because a satin surface can provide strong adhesion for later paint layers and helps metallics, gunmetals, and dark acrylics flow smoothly over the primer.

What surfaces does Vallejo Mecha Primer Black bond to?

It bonds to styrene plastic, ABS, resin, PVC, metal, and photo-etch parts. Clean parts with isopropyl alcohol before priming to remove mold release agents, fingerprints, and sanding dust.

What PSI should I use for Vallejo Mecha Primer Black?

Start at 1520 PSI with a 0.3mm or 0.4mm needle. Apply 23 thin passes rather than a single heavy wet coat. For recessed areas, panel lines, and small miniature details, reduce pressure slightly and keep the airbrush moving to prevent pooling.

Can I use black primer for pre-shading before painting?

Yes. This is one of the strongest use cases for Mecha Primer Black. Apply the black base, then lightly airbrush your mid-tone color from above and at shallow angles, leaving recesses and shadow areas darker. This creates natural ambient shadow without a separate post-shading step.

How does Black compare to the other Mecha Primer colors?

Black 74.642 maximizes shadow depth and contrast, making it ideal for metallics, NMM, pre-shading, dark armor, and chipping effects. Grey 74.641 is neutral for most general paint schemes, Sand 74.644 is a warm mid-tone for desert subjects and inner frames, and Ivory 74.643 provides a lighter base for bright colors and white schemes.
